We'll see if it is a hit or miss.
Usually, when I'm stumped on a story, I play with different decks of tarots to get motivated. Today, I'm using the Legacy of the Divine Tarot. And what I'll normally do is just randomly flip a card--like I did today. We've pulled the Queen of Cups.
Here's a bit about the card:
The Queen of Cups rules the ocean of our feelings, fantasies, and altered state of perceptions. (It's ironic that I pulled this card today, I've been submerged in a very awesome YA waterworld for a crit for a writing bud.)
She's sensitive to the emotional state of others and is surrounded by free flowing movement. She's a nurturer, sometimes psychic or an empath.
Actually, this card is very much like me. I'm getting a bit spooked that this is the first turn for this new blog post. It might be more revealing than I want it to be. lol.
Okay, so, here's the story that I made up now to go with this card. Granted, this won't be a whole story. It might be a scene in a work in process that I'm working on, or something I'll use later. :) Enjoy!
This is a completely original piece made up on 3/31/12 for your pleasure. @Rachel Firasek
An Ocean Scent
Margie touched him. A brief skim of the hand along his shoulder, absorbing the connection. She'd followed him for three blocks and the call wouldn't let her go. He flinched beneath her hand, but didn't shrug her off as so many others would have.
She inhaled the scent of ocean and clenched down on his shoulder. "Excuse me. What is your name?"
The man had sun glasses on and hadn't given her a glimpse of his face. But, he didn't have to. She knew exactly who he was. No one else on Earth could carry the scent of the ocean the way he did.
"Why, Margie, don't you remember me?"
No, it coulnd't be. Sky. The man she'd walked away from--or rather swam away from over one hundred years ago.
She backed up and stumbled over a man peddling some trinket on the sidewalk. The vagrant shoved her aside and growled some obscenity up at her, but she couldn't hear over the roar rushing through her ears. The surf's call fought its way down her body and the tingling in her legs warned if she didn't get away from Sky soon, the crowded streets of New York would have a very disturbing new attraction.
"No, you can't be here. How did you find me?"
He reached across the sidewalk and yanked her up against him. "Did you really think you could run from me forever. We were destined." He ripped away the sunglasses and his black eyes roamed her face. "How could you leave me like that? At our mating? I thought that you loved me...that we were friends. Was all of it a lie?"
Every moment that they had spent together had been truth. She'd never lied to him. But, she also knew if she stayed with him, she'd have had the same life as every other female in her clan. Breeding and watching the coves for ships to scavenge. Never taking part in that actual plundering of the vessels. No, that wasn't good enough for a girl. So, she'd fled. It had broken her heart, but she'd made a home for herself in the city and he wouldn't take away the things she'd fought for.
"I never loved you." Gods, the words tore into her battered heart. The darkness that creased the lines above his eyes sent a fine tremor down her body. "I never wanted to mate you."
Sky pulled her even closer, and the concentration she needed to hold her human form fled. "You are a liar. But, never then. Only now. I will know why." He reached down and flipped her legs over one arm and caught her shoulders with the other. "I will not let you go until I know the truth."
This close to him, she absorbed the wonderful aroma wafting through the muggy street. She'd never be able to fight that scent. "Sky, please. Just let me go."
His mouth lowered to a breath from hers. "When you are honest, I will release you." His tongue snuch from between his full lips and flicked hers. "I will know by nightfall."

Okay, whew. Before I get any deeper. Wow, who would have thought that I could get that kind of intro just from one flip of the cards. :) What did you think? Please no critting, this is a totally rough draft, lol.
Oh how fun! I don't have any cards. Is there a website that will draw a random card for me? Love the story, Rachel. :)
ReplyDeleteTheresa, I'm not real sure about the tarot sites, but I'm sure there are some somewhere. :) Thanks for reading.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! There's a book about using tarot cards as inspiration for writing that I love called Tarot for Writers by Corrine Kenner.
ReplyDeleteI love that book. :) Bought it last year. So helpful when the plot gets stale. :) Thanks, Jennifer.
ReplyDeleteInteresting new blog idea, Rachel. Intriguing story blip!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Calisa. :)
DeleteI love the insight into how you write! Very fun!
ReplyDeleteThank you! :) I hope this is a little different and fun for everyone.
DeleteLove this idea. Maybe it will help get me motivated.
ReplyDeleteWoot! I use it when I'm stumped, so why couldn't you use it for that! :)
DeleteGreat idea, although stuff like tarot cards and the Ouija board make me a little uneasy. Natural born scairdy cat, I guess.
ReplyDeleteCaridad, I don't play with Ouija either. It ooks me out in a big way. Some doors should never be opened. :)
DeleteI love the Tarot. However, every single time I do them for myself or have a friend do them for me, the dang tower comes up. Consequently, I don't touch them anymore. I'd rather not know when the next disaster is going to arrive. LOL
ReplyDeleteLouann, I hear you. When you get a card attached to you it can really mess with your mojo--mostly because we let it in our heads. :) Thank you for stopping by and sharing.
DeleteLove this idea and love what you wrote - you need to keep going. :D
ReplyDeleteThanks, girl, I'm putting it in a folder for my next piece. :)
Deletewhat a fun way to get motivated! And get new ideas for the files :D Love the idea and the story :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! :) I thought it was a little different and it really works for me.
DeleteRachel
ReplyDeleteI am definitely going to try that one!
:) I hope it works for you!
DeleteWhat a cool idea, Rachel!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nicola. It saved my buns on the phoenix series! :)
